Political corruption suddenly not looking that bad

Fabian Robertson reports.

Dominic Perrottet’s appointment as NSW Premier has cast a new light on political corruption. All of a sudden, Gladys Berejiklian’s alleged role in a $35.5 million pork-barreling scheme with ex-boyfriend Daryl Maguire is not looking that bad when compared to the antics of the bespectacled fuckwit now leading our state.

In 2019, Perrottet voted against the successful bill to decriminalise abortion in NSW, claiming supporters were on the “wrong side of history”.

In a now infamous 2016 Facebook post, Perrottet voiced support for Donald Trump and a number of controversial views. “If you want a plebiscite on same-sex marriage, you are not a homophobe,” he wrote.

Perrottet also argued that “if you question manmade climate change, you are not a sceptic”, backing up his framing of Labor’s climate change policy as “almost religious devotion of the political left to climate change”.

As a devout Catholic, Perrottet opposed Victorian legislation forcing Catholic priests to notify police if a priest confessed to sexual abuse in the confessional.

Policy-wise, Perrottet was responsible for the mismanaged $60 billion icare worker’s compensation scheme, which was found to have systematically underpaid injured workers while paying out company executives.

As treasurer, Perrottet oversaw pay cuts to thousands of public sector workers in the pandemic and consistently pushes for privatisation, calling it “the golden key that unlocked the door of opportunity for NSW”.

Time will tell if the ex-President of the Young Liberals’ governance will be as cooked as his personal views.
