SRC Meeting Recap: Smooth sailing for Switchroots amidst comically weak Liberal dissent.

Fabian Robertson covers the juiciest talking points from March’s 3-hour SRC meeting

Leftbloc shuts down comically timid Liberal defense of government welfare

Women’s Officer Lia Perkins (Switchroots) censured the Federal government’s insufficient welfare program, putting forward a motion to support the $80 day. Upon hearing no dissent, Sanagavarapu reminisced on the more vocal “liberals of old”, while Hektor Vineburg (NLS) questioned, “What happened to the ideas boom?”

The goading appeared to have worked, with Matthew Harte (Libdependent) piping up at the last moment to dissent.

“Money doesn’t grow on trees”, he started.

Harte’s Braveheart-like stand did not last long, however. Under the cursing reprehension of the Leftbloc, Harte crumbled.

“I’ve had a few gin and tonics,” he whimpered.

Environment Officer Drew Beacom (Switchroots) was quick to ridicule: “fuck off, a couple of a g and ts and I also find myself thinking living below the poverty line is ok, develop some fucking empathy, not all of us can afford to live off daddys money.”

What followed was a bit of a pile-on.

Perkins: “WTF”

Chaffey: “Why do you hate the poor?”

Dibben: “Get fucked mate, motion to put Matthew on the dole”

Lancaster: “Fuck off Mate”

Williams: “Everyone deserves to fucking live”

Before some much-needed tenderness from Sanagavarapu: “you good Matthew?”

The exchange was overall a valiant attempt from Harte, who, despite being heavily outnumbered and outwitted, risked everything for a slice of stupol glory.

Motion to “condemn Liberal rapists”

The Women’s Officers Amelia Mertha (Switchroots) and Kimberley Dibben (Switchroots) put forward a motion to condemn “Liberal rapists and the ongoing coverup of sexual violence” in the wake of rape allegations against Attorney General Christian Porter and an unnamed Liberal Staffer. Matthew Harte (Libdependent) dissented to the motion, claiming that the issue was not exclusive to the Liberal Party but was instead about the “Canberra bubble”.

Dibben didn’t hold back, “No fuck off, what the fuck, take some fucking responsibility.”

And neither did Vice President Roisin Murphy (NLS), “Get fucked Liberal scum, (I) obviously think that’s fucking awful.”

Harte did not reply to Dibben and Murphy’s concerns.

President warns against USyd Board’s proposal to move to 12-week semesters

Sanagavarapu condemned the USyd Board’s proposal to move to 12-week semesters, indicating that such a move would unfairly increase “staff and student workloads while limiting teaching income.”

“Vaccines seem pretty cool” - Sanagavarapu

The SRC proposed coordinating with USyd to spread awareness to students, especially internationals, about the free availability of Covid-19 vaccines to all. The council emphasised the importance of students knowing that vaccines would be free to all students, even those who are not Australian citizens and do not possess a Medicare card.

Solidarity with Myanmar

The SRC passed a motion to stand in solidarity with Myanmar, which is currently under military occupation by its own army in a complete upheaval of the democratic process.

“This does not exist in a vacuum”, said Education Officer Madeleine Clark (SAlt).

Opposing transphobic McIver's Ladies Baths in Coogee

Queer Officer Oscar Chaffey (Switchroots) censured the “fucked and transphobic” exclusion of transgender women from McIver's Ladies Baths in Coogee.

SRC supports fight against destruction of sacred Wahluu Aboriginal Women’s site

Environmental Officer Lauren Lancaster (Switchroots) passed a motion to support the fight against the destruction of sacred Wahluu Aboriginal Women’s site to build a go kart track. See today’s rally event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/2819699674964816
