GOODNESS ME! Tina Lee Allegedly Embezzled $12K From the USU

By Pulp Goss

2019 USU Board Candidate, USU Life Member and former Volunteer of the Year Tina Lee is alleged to have embezzled approximately $12 000 from the USU, by taking from a number of clubs and societies that she held executive positions on.

Financial discrepancies were first noticed and reported to the USU in August, who have since referred the matter to the police and suspended Lee’s USU membership. Pulp understands that Lee is alleged to have withdrawn the amounts from the bank accounts of a number of societies, including a charitable club.

Tina Lee was a candidate in this year’s USU Board elections. Whilst studying at the University of Sydney she has held executive positions in multiple societies, with stints as Treasurer for the Red Cross Society, Calligraphy Society and the Sydney University Medical Science Society. She has also held student representative positions at Academic Board and the Science Faculty Board.

In a statement to Pulp, the USU explained that “clubs and societies maintain their own bank accounts, however in the meantime the USU, in collaboration with the banks, are working with the executives to ensure that additional measures are put in place to reduce the risk of this kind of illegal and unethical activity from happening again.”

The USU has since met with the banks concerned to ensure that Lee no longer has access to any club accounts, and has met with each of the executives involved. The USU have also specified that the Police “are now taking appropriate action.”

More to come.

Pulp has reached out to Tina Lee for comment, and will update the article in the event that she responds.
