Congratulations to our Mandarin Debating Team who were placed second in the prestigious International Chinese Debating Competition held at Beijing Normal University Zhu Hai. We sent six debaters to compete against teams from 24 Universities for the title. Especial congratulations to USU team captain, Charles Yuchen Zhang, who was awarded the top prize in the individual competition. Our first debating trip to China was in 2007 in an English debating competition between USU and Tsing Hua. In only 4 years of Mandarin debating, we are already competing at the highest level. Debating is a vital part of the USU story as the USU began as a debating society in 1874. It has since evolved from a small society of ambitious student debaters to the largest service provider on campus and still prides itself on its debating involvement.
